Weiterziehen

Theresa Binder

Weiterziehen is a performance in which a long and heavy piece of cloth is pulled up a mountain in the Wienerwald (Eng. Vienna Woods). The performance was recorded on video. Traces of the environment are getting visible on the cloth as abrasions and destruction while the video documents how the textile is being pulled further and further.

The title Weiterziehen means to move on or to pull something further. I have chosen a path in a local forest which I am very familiar with and which is located close to the place where I grew up. The location is familiar as it is a very touristic area, being one of Vienna’s local hills and a well-known part of the city’s green infrastructure.

For the textile piece I have chosen jute and cotton, natural fabrics in natural colors, to set the focus on the length of the fabric itself. The materials are very contradictory to regular hiking clothing of today.

The cloth is worn like a coat, connected by only two seams which are placed on the shoulders thus connecting the piece to the performer. The coldness and the burden of the fabric can be read through the body language of the person performing.
