Nightwalk III

Full-height 90% Black Strikethrough

The nights of Vienna are especially long in fall. Darkness comes quite early in the day and a sleepless night might seem very long, especially when spent wandering through the city, into nature, towards something familiar in the urban landscape. For the Nightwalk III in fall 2020, we have taken ourselves again to the outskirts of Vienna, seeking the unknown until sunrise.

There is no better way to break the ice among “strangers” than make them do something together for an extended period of time. If this something then happens, a very long walk through the night of a city that many have limited knowledge of, it’s done! Friendships are born, emotions are shared and a common experience is created. What a team at the end of the day (or should we better say the night?)!

Two years ago we have been exploring the far west of Vienna: from the Wotruba Church walking back to the city centre. Last year we moved to the far east and explored the new developing area of Seestadt Aspern in the 22nd Vienna district.

This year we visited the far north: 1210 Floridsdorf. The starting point was the new Social Design outpost Furore Soft. From there we explored Vienna from a “Transdanubian” perspective. The small but motivated group did not shy away from the cold and marched to the Danube, where we investigated an unused water slide. In the early morning hours we reached the viewpoint at Cobenzl, where we prepared tea on the gas stove with our freezing shaking hands to wait for the sunrise.

It would be reductive to report in detail what a marvellous experience it was, once again. It’s always different and always special. Just the rules stay the same: no phones, no watches, no maps, no transportation, no photos (just on film). Where and what, will our next exploration bring us? Stay awake and come along!
