Oskar was developed and took place as an open platform for the University of Applied Arts Vienna, artists, people with public interest, art initiatives and citizens. With the objective of using the square in front of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, taking the educational institution into the street to capture the space for a certain period of time, the project showed new potentials of the square and different formats for artistic interventions in public space.
OSKAR NIMMT PLATZ – space for decent disturbance represents a prototype for programming public space and an open format for ‘taking place’ through art and artistic interventions. With the objective of using the square in front of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, taking the educational institution into the street to capture the space for a certain period of time, the project was initiated by the University board which invited the Social Design studio for that challenge. The project was informed by the historical and sociopolitical functions and responsibilities of university squares as well as the current political situation. Oskar was developed and took place as an open platform for the Uni- versity of Applied Arts Vienna, artists, people with public interest, art initiatives and citizens. Various departments of the university and others developed contributions which came together on the site. The project serves as a prototype for programming public space and has made the potential of Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz tangible. The visions that were triggered are directed towards future usages of the square, as well as the creation of new public spheres by taking-place through artistic formats and interventions in public space.
